I love being a student! I have had the opportunity to teach preschool through graduate school, and at each level I find that I'm the one who is learning.
I began my teaching career at the independent school from which I graduated - the Bernard Zell Anshe Emet Day School, in Chicago. It was a wonderful experience to have my former teachers as colleagues, I felt mentored and guided. I had the chance to coach, to write curriculum and ultimately to become the Head of Middle School.
In 1992 I joined the faculty of the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools where I taught English and helped to create the Middle School Humanities program. At Lab School I learned about the work of John Dewey and studied the methods of education; I learned about pedagogy. I spent twelve wonderful years at Lab School during which time I was a teacher, advisor, coach, grade level chair, faculty chair, Summer School Principal and Head of Middle School.
In 2004 I moved to New Haven, Connecticut to become the Headmaster of the Foote School. While at Foote I helped to create a student and teacher exchange program with the Yali Middle School in Changsha China, created a school learning center, and established a teacher mentoring programming to help people new to the profession develop their skills as teachers.
I accepted the position as Head of the Kazoo School in 2007 and am truly enjoying the opportunity to connect with this thoughtful and supportive community.
In my career I have been a lecturer at Northeastern Illinois University on Progressive Education and a writing teacher at the Graham School of Continuing Education at the University of Chicago. I received the National Association of Independent Schools' E. E. Ford Foundation Fellowship for Educational Leadership and have spent over twenty-five years as a teacher, administrator and leader in independent school education.
In my work as a teacher and administrator, I have written about, spoken to and taught parents, faculty and community members about child development and the particular developmental needs of early adolescents.
