Extended Day

The Kazoo School offers children a wide variety of enrichment classes ranging from drama, and sports to World Languages and the arts. We encourage our students to try new activities and explore classes that may at first seem unusual and different. We want children to explore what it’s like to be an actor, to experience being part of a sports team, to try to speak French, or to work with a teacher to develop a new activity based on a hobby or interest that is shared.
The goals of the Extended Day Program are:
- To provide a safe environment for children to engage in interesting enrichment classes.
- To enhance children’s physical, intellectual, social, emotional and creative development.
- To recognize and encourage individual interest and talents.
The Program uses the classrooms and campus of the Kazoo School including the Library, playground, and the adjacent 50-acre Kleinstuck Preserve. In addition to our daily enrichment classes, we offer children a reading area, and a designated homework room. The Kazoo School playground includes a large game playing field, playground equipment, sandbox, and basketball court. Kleinstuck Preserve offers nature trails for hiking and nature activities.
The Extended Day is from 3:15-6:00 p.m., Monday-Friday, on all full days of school.

Summer Session
We never take a vacation from learning, so at Kazoo School we offer programs to enrich the months students spend away from the traditional school schedule. We invite current students, former students, and those children not associated with the Kazoo School who are interested in an exciting summer filled with academic enrichment to join us.
We offer children entering Kindergarten through 8th grade five weeks of a variety of classes, clubs, clinics, experiments, projects, field trips, and fun. Sign up for one session, two sessions, or join us for the full five weeks! We offer half-day options, as well as extended day programs.
As you review the class options please note that students should register for classes based on the grade they will be entering in September. The Summer Session presents students with exciting opportunities to be involved in courses with small class sizes. However, programs that are under enrolled may be canceled prior to the beginning of the session. Should the program you are registered to attend be canceled, we will contact you and provide a full refund.

Athletic Program
The Kazoo School supports a no-cut policy, based on the belief that all students should have the opportunity to experience and contribute to a team, regardless of skill level. The no-cut policy provides some limitations, particularly in team sports such as basketball and volleyball, where large teams are not always easy to manage and issues surrounding playing time and practice time can occur. Our coaches are sensitive to this issue and try to work with their teams to create a positive experience for all participants. We have found that the benefits of providing our students with an equal opportunity to join a team, or a no-cut policy, far outweigh the disadvantages.
With this opportunity comes responsibilities. The athletes are expected to attend all practice sessions and contests. Absences must be excused by the coach, and should be detailed in a parental note. Generally, half of the contests will be held at other schools, which requires that our athletes travel during the week. Athletes should ensure that they have appropriate clothing and especially footwear for participation in their selected activity. Any physical limitations or medical restrictions should be communicated with the coach before the first practice. Homework schedules and healthy sleep patterns are an important part of the student's responsibility.
Our no-cut policy refers to the opportunity to join a team -- it does not guarantee playing time; however all athletes who adhere to the coach's training guidelines will participate in competitions.
Student athletes need support from their coach, teammates and their families in order to meet the challenges that an athletic team offers. They are experiencing an increased academic workload, and may also have many additional interests outside of school. For some of our students, participation on a School team is the first competitive team experience they have had, and juggling their many commitments is a part of their learning process. Student athletes stay eligible for participation by keeping up to date with this workload.
In order that the Middle School athletic programs serve the athletes during the season, and also best prepare them for potential participation in High School, the program's focus is on skill development, knowledge of the activity, basic strategies, and the rules of the sport.
Being part of an athletic team at any level requires commitment and dedication. Most students who fully commit themselves to the programs will see marked improvements by the end of the season. Enjoyment of the activity is critical to the motivation of the athletes, but they should expect to work hard, and understand that success will not come overnight. Joining a team offers countless opportunities for personal development beyond the attainment of physical skills. Athletes learn self-discipline, the value of hard work and self-sacrifice, goal setting, problem solving, self-evaluation, and teamwork. There is much to learn about oneself and others in winning and losing; we hope our athletes will develop perseverance, and excellent sportsmanship.
All teams are open to 5th, 6th, 7th & 8th graders.
