Common Questions
What is meant by a basegroup versus classroom?
A basegroup is a multiage class comprised of students from several
different traditional grade levels. Children are assigned to a basegroup
at the beginning of each year after thoughtful consideration of
their academic, social and emotional development. The Kazoo School
faculty addresses all aspects of each student’s development
in determining their best placement. Children are placed in basegroups
where they will have academic peers, and opportunities for friendship
and leadership.
How are children evaluated? Are there letter grades?
With small class sizes, teachers have an opportunity to know and
understand the strengths and challenges of each child. Pre-conference
progress reports are sent to parents prior to fall and spring conferences.
More detailed written progress reports are completed at the end
of each semester. Formal letter grades are not assigned to students
until middle school (6th grade). It is our belief that students
learn better in a noncompetitive, supportive environment, one that
encourages each student to achieve his/her personal best.
How are music, art and drama taught?
In addition to weekly art classes, the creative arts are integrated
throughout the curriculum and incorporated into units of study by
basegroup teachers. Visiting artists lead workshops for students
in music, dance, drama and the visual arts. Students regularly attend
community symphony, theatre and museum events. Students participate
in semiannual school performance programs that incorporate drama,
music and dance. During March, specific “March Winds”
programming focuses on the arts. Instrumental music instruction
and band are available for students in grades 5 – 8.
How do Kazoo School graduates transition to high school?
Kazoo School alumni successfully transition to area public or private
high schools. Our graduates possess the academic and personal skills
to help them achieve success in any school. They demonstrate a high
degree of confidence, motivation and a love for learning. Each year
many of our graduates are accepted into the Kalamazoo Area Math
and Science Center and/or into advanced placement courses.
Why are teachers addressed by their first names?
The practice of addressing teachers by their first names demonstrates
that teachers are facilitators of the learning process and partners
with students and parents.
What kind of diversity is found at Kazoo School?
“We believe that the diversity of social, cultural, and economic
backgrounds represented in the school community contributes to understanding
the rights and responsibilities of each member of the larger community.”
(See Mission Statement and Beliefs Statement) Kazoo School celebrates
diversity. All children are taught tolerance and respect for all.
To facilitate economic diversity, Kazoo School offers a program
that provides financial assistance to families who qualify.
